President of Latvia Egils Levits
Levits emphasized that illusions prevailed in the West, that Russia will change and that everything can be negotiated with this country. According to the president, the only language Russia understands is that the West must be strong militarily, politically and economically. Thus, Russia would realize that any attack on any NATO member would be an automatic loss for Moscow.
“Ukraine defends our values on its land. And therefore we have an obligation to support Ukraine. This recognition has slowly grown and covers the majority of society in the West, but it is not that there are not other thoughts as well. The primary task now is to ensure Ukraine’s victory and Ukraine will define itself when the war ends. This is Ukraine’s issue. We help Ukraine as long as it is needed,” said the President of Latvia.
CONTEXT:
The annual Munich Security Conference began in Germany on Friday, February 17, where this year the focus is on the war in Ukraine. More than 40 heads of state and government and 90 ministers will participate in the conference in the Bavarian capital this year.
This year’s conference is held shortly before the anniversary of the start of Russia’s war in Ukraine, and it is understandable that this topic pervades the entire conference. The participants of the conference will seek answers to the questions – what was the basis for Russia’s repeated invasion of Ukraine and why do many countries hesitate to support Ukraine and condemn Russia? Many countries have indeed chosen to be neutral, and in the opinion of the conference director, the fact that a significant number of countries have not condemned Russia’s aggression shows that it is not enough to defend the “status quo”.
