During the Pandemic, Water Needs Threefold Increased

Merdeka.com – Special Staff of the Minister of Water Resources of the Ministry of PUPR, Firdaus Ali, said that the need for clean water during the Covid-19 pandemic increased sharply. The increase was unmitigated, it even reached three times.

“It could be because people wash their hands several times a day and clean using water, so they are not aware that consumption is quite high,” he explained in Jakarta, Tuesday (31/3).

He understands that in industry, water is used as a material to support the production process. The need for water for the industrial sector should be greater because of an increase in production activities, so the need for water will also increase.

Meanwhile, Deputy Factory Manager of PT Ajinomoto Pabrik Mojokerto, Hariyo said, in the midst of increasing water demand, his party is committed to using water as economically and efficiently as possible in all production processes.

Hariyono explained, before the WMI or WMI Improvement Project, the company utilized around 5,600,000 KL per year. However, until the end of FY 2020 the estimate is around 3,600,000 KL per year.

“This means that we have succeeded in reducing water by 35 percent,” he explained.

Reduce Water Use by 35 Percent

According to him, this is quite encouraging, because even by reducing water use by up to 35 percent, the ability to produce MSG (Monosodium Glutamate) and other seasonings can still increase.

One of the ways to make savings is by increasing the quality of water (water treatment) in the production process. “We are currently working on reduce, reuse, recovery and recycle activities for water use in every existing activity,” he explained.

“The recovery process optimizes water quality so that it does not require a lot of wasted water. In addition to reducing the amount of water consumption itself, we are also making efforts to recycle water in the production process,” he concluded.
