DEPOK – At time pandemic COVID-19 like today, the body’s immune system must be maintained. The immune system is a mechanism in the human body, which functions to guard against attacks from various foreign objects or pathogens such as bacteria or viruses.

Christin SS Lumban Tobing, Sp.GK., a clinical nutrition specialist from Siloam Hospitals Heart Diagram, said that if the body’s immune system is compromised, it will be easy to get sick. For that the immune system must be strong in order to avoid various diseases. “So during a pandemic like this, what needs to be taken care of is the immune system,” said Christin, through an education webinar Zoom, Thursday (27/05) in Cinere Depok. To maintain the stability of the body’s immune system, he continued, it can be met through regular nutritional intake as well as vaccination. Vaccination aims to provide antigens into the body as a stimulus so that the body is stimulated to secrete antibodies or respond to vaccines given by the body. “For this reason, each antigen has its own specific antibody, for example in Influenza which has its own antibody,” he added.

In the webinar entitled ‘Caring for Elderly Patients with Optimal Nutrition During the COVID-19 Pandemic’, dr. Christin SS Lumban Tobing, Sp.GK. explained that giving vaccines will protect people and the surrounding community, because not everyone can receive and get vaccines.

According to him, people who don’t accept vaccine will experience immunity due to herd immunity. The stronger the group’s immunity, the lower the impact of the pathogen that will spread. Also read: Task Force Says Government Still Discussing ASN Work from Bali

Well, so that the body’s response is always optimal, he explained, there are several factors that must be considered. Among other things are host factors, namely age, sex, genetics and comorbid diseases such as hypertension and sugar. Extrinsic factors, such as whether there are other infections following or currently receiving antibiotics. Lifestyle factors, such as consuming alcohol and smoking or other physical activity.

And the other main thing is related to nutrition and the digestive tract. “To get a good and optimal immune system, it is necessary to pay attention to good nutritional status, not those who are malnourished, such as malnutrition or excess nutrition such as obesity,” said Christin.
