During menstruation, the risk of infection increases due to bad bacteria

PEOPLE’S MIND – Member of the Executive Board of the Indonesian Obstetrics and Gynecology Association (POGI), Prof. Dr. dr. Dwiana Ocviyanti, Sp.OG(K), MPH explained, during menstruation, the risk of infection increases due to the increase in the number of bad bacteria in the vagina.

This is due to the decrease in vaginal acidity due to the presence of menstrual blood.

“Therefore, it is important to implement Menstrual Hygiene Management (MKM),” he said in a Webinar entitled ‘Healthy and Clean During Menstruation’ in the context of Menstrual Hygiene Day which falls every 28 May.

The webinar was held related to the awareness of Indonesian women on the importance of hygiene management during the menstrual period which is still very low.

Ignorance of proper menstrual hygiene management can increase the risk of discomfort (itching, unpleasant odor and vaginal discharge) to infections in the female area.

On the other hand, mothers play an important role in transferring knowledge about menstrual hygiene management to their daughters.

According to Prof. Dwiana, the implementation of MHM includes cleaning the vagina properly, thoroughly and periodically; using clean running water with a feminine antiseptic cleanser that is suitable for vaginal pH and can be used during menstruation; use clean sanitary napkins and can absorb blood well; and change pads regularly at least every 4 hours.

“If you feel abnormal symptoms during menstruation, it is recommended to carry out further examinations to the doctor,” continued Prof. Dwiana.
