Simon le Bon, frontman of the British group, during the ceremony in Los Angeles,
was hugely successful in the 1980s, read a letter from Andy Taylor. In it, he explains that four years ago he was diagnosed with stage four prostate cancer.
The disease is not “immediately life-threatening,” but “there is no cure,” Taylor wrote.
He notes that despite his team’s extraordinary efforts, it would be too much for him both physically and mentally to attend the ceremony.
“But none of this should detract from what the band has accomplished (with or without me) in 44 years,” Taylor wrote.
Speaking to reporters backstage, Simon le Bon said the news of Taylor’s illness was “absolutely devastating”.
“We love Andy. I’m not going to be here crying, I think it’s inappropriate, but that’s how I feel,” she said.
In 2006, the band severed ties with Taylor due to “irreconcilable differences” between him and the pioneers of the new wave.
Former band frontman Warren Cucurulo was also absent from Saturday’s ceremony in Los Angeles.
