Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia Many have made video reviews about the durability of the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Unfortunately, many have shown that Apple’s latest flagship is not easily damaged.

Consumer Reports also tried testing with two different iPhone Pro Max that they bought at a regular retail store.

The results show that the company’s best cellphone can survive falls as many times as the previous highest version of the iPhone. It also managed to withstand a pressure of around 49.9 kg in the bending test.

They measured the force using a high-precision Instron compression testing machine, applying pressure in the center of the device and along the length of the phone to see if it would cause the glass on the back to break.

“This shows that a lot of force is needed. There is some flexibility in the cellphone which recovers when the force is released,” said Maria Rerecich, senior director of product testing at CR, quoted from her official statement, Friday (6/10/2023).

Then they also did a drop test. Consumer Reports used a separate iPhone 15 Pro Max model that was dropped 100 times in a case lined with rocks on the top and bottom.

This test aims to see what the impact of the iPhone 15 Pro Max will be when it falls from a waist-sized height onto a concrete surface.

When carrying out the test, they divide it into two stages. Each 50 falls in a row to see the effect.

“We’re not trying to be cruel. We’re just making sure that each phone is impacted from multiple angles, including corners and edges,” he explained.

What they found in those lab tests contrasts with a series of videos from online reviews that show glass shattering in drop and bend scenarios, sometimes resulting in a network of cracks on the back of the phone.

The claim that the new iPhone is too complicated may sound familiar. In 2014, the newly released iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus were branded with the Twitter hashtag #bendgate after people started posting photos and videos of broken phones.

“Using the same Instron engine we use today, CR determined that both phones were able to withstand what we consider to be reasonable forces.” he concluded.
