The first failed attempt came at 6.00 meters, but in the second it went the way. Thus, he became the first pole vaulter to reach that height outdoors this Olympic season.
Then he raised to 6.10 and even at that height the first attempt was unsuccessful. The second was quite close, but there was also a demolition. He gathered for a long time before the third jump and then he flew over the crossbar.
There have only been five higher pole vaults outdoors through the ages. It is Duplantis himself and the legendary Sergej Bubka who have been responsible for those jumps.
– I know I’m in this shape now. And it will only get better, he says.
“Mondo” then set the bar at the world record height of 6.19. The first attempt he interrupted already during the approach and the next two also failed.
With today’s competition, he passed the American Christopher Nilsen in the annual statistics and went up as world number one.
The result is close to the best of the year for Duplantis, who jumped 6.10 indoors in Belgrade in February.
