Duped perfumes, a legal but controversial practice

Luxury perfumes must face brand imitations which make them strikingly similar alternatives, with unbeatable prices. Investigate these dupes.

Feel luxury without spending tens or even hundreds of euros. To allow as many people as possible to wear the most chic fragrances, certain discount brands have created imitations of the most famous scents. These dupes reproduce the floral notes of the biggest brands to near perfection and they are 10 to 15 times cheaper than the originals.

Although the practice is not prohibited, Corinne Champagner-Katz, lawyer specializing in intellectual property, is outraged. “Parallelism is dishonest, illegal and would very well correspond to a theft of economic value“, she said.

Makeup and skincare products are also affected by this practice. But buying them at a lower cost is safe according to biologist Christine Lafforgue. “If there is a list of ingredients, it means that a file has been submitted to Europe for this product.“, says the cosmetics specialist.
