Duolingo, the company behind the eponymous application specializing in language learning, has just opened its very first restaurant, a taqueria (establishment specializing in tacos). Focus on this decision which is ultimately not so far from the historical business of Duolingo.
This is an unusual decision taken by the language learning company, Duolingo. Indeed, the firm will open in mid-June, near its Pittsburgh headquarters, a take-out taco restaurant called Duo’s Taqueria. It will be worn by chef Marcella Ogrodnik and will offer a whole assortment of Mexican food, like a real restaurant: tacos with marinated pork, chorizo or even vegan, with desserts and the possibility of adding cheese or guacamole! In short, it’s a real taqueria.

Why Duolingo opened a restaurant
Duolingo mentions, as the first reason, the need to show that it was easy to learn a language. The firm explains: We wanted to give back to the city what it gave us with good food, discounts to show people that it is easy and beneficial to learn a new language. The firm is also in full recruitment to find those who will sell the tacos made in Duolingo.
The taqueria is not disconnected from the business of learning a new language. Indeed, the restaurant’s customers are invited to solve an “Español Challenge” which will allow them to obtain between 10% and 20% reduction on the order, ” a good way to push people out of their comfort zone and encourage them to learn another language “says Marcella Orgodnik.
While this is Duolingo’s first restaurant, it’s not the first time that the company has partnered with establishments of this type in Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami and even New York. The objective then was to promote Yiddish. Last February, Duolingo also partnered with Haitian restaurants to showcase Haitian Creole, which had just arrived on the app. This operation allowed everyone to benefit from Duolingo’s premium offer for one month.
