Dunkin’ Donuts bankrupt in the Netherlands

Bad news for lovers of brightly colored glazed donuts (and a cup of coffee to go with it). Dunkin’ Donuts has been declared bankrupt in the Netherlands. It was a second attempt by the company to make it in our country.

Since 2017, the company has been (again) in the Netherlands. But the company has now filed for bankruptcy itself. Co-shareholder Roberto Fava confirmed this after reporting from The Telegraph. A curator says in the same newspaper “that we will see how we can continue with the company in the best possible way.”

Branches open for the time being

The intention is that the 50 branches in the Netherlands will remain open for the time being. Staff members have been informed and will soon receive answers to their questions. The curator will sit down with the company’s management today.

Dunkin’ Donuts has been around since 1950, when it was founded in America. The Dunkin’ Donuts brand name is gradually being replaced by Dunkin’. They have a total of 12,900 branches in 42 countries. They sell a lot of bagels, muffins, coffee and of course donuts.

Second attempt at selling donuts

It is not the first time that the results in our country have been disappointing. Between 1997 and 2000 they had five branches and a factory in the Netherlands. These were closed because they could not find investors.

In 2017, she opened a number of branches again in major cities. There was a lot of enthusiasm for it at the time. Dozens of people camped on Vredenburgplein in Utrecht for their opening campaign, wrote Metro at the time.

Since 2019, the company’s donuts can also be found in Jumbo supermarkets. Later, Bakker Bart branches started selling the products.

Shares to Van der Valk

Last year, the establishments came into the hands of hotel group Van der Valk, which acquired the majority of the shares. This gave them the right to use the Dunkin’ brand from the American Inspire Brands. Van der Valk wanted to grow the chain and hoped to attract young people to their hotels. But that doesn’t seem to have worked.

Are you a fan of the store and would you like to score another donut? There’s a good chance that your favorite branch is still open today. This morning it was still possible to order online, but the curator does not guarantee that the order will actually be delivered.
