Dune saves theaters

It has not been a last year of celebrations for the movie theaters on the planet. The pandemic forced the closure of almost most of the complexes, so for months they were without an audience, which hit the coffers of one of the most popular and profitable industries of the show.

In addition, in the face of such an adverse scenario, many companies decided to release their productions on streaming platforms, as happened with Warner Bros in alliance with HBO Max, and Disney with Disney +, which yielded less revenue, without ever replicating the impact. to bring a story to the big screen.

But all misfortune passes and slowly the venues are returning to their usual rhythm. And also the arrival of large productions. The last one is the science fiction film Dune, by Denis Villeneuve and starring Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson and Zendaya among others, made it the best pandemic premiere for Warner.

Released in US theaters on October 21, 2021, the film earned a total of US $ 40.1 million. This far exceeds the US $ 31 of Godzilla vs Kong, which hit theaters in March this year and previously held the record.

Globally, Dune also racked up $ 47 million during its opening weekend. In total, grouping all the latitudes, the film throws US $ 220 million at the box office.

All of this seems to have as its sole destination success, at least financial: the film had a production cost of US $ 165 million, not counting marketing expenses, so it would be on its way to recover its investment. And, for the rest, it leaves in the industry the sweet taste that – despite the reign of streaming during the confinement stage – the cinema continues to be an irreplaceable protagonist.
