The sequel, directed by Denis Villeneuve, began its overseas rollout on Wednesday in 13 markets and has already amassed an impressive $20.8 million in total. The film has been met with great success, claiming the number one spot in all markets it has been released in so far.
Impressive Opening Day Figures
On Thursday, Dune: Part Two expanded to an additional 42 international box office markets, bringing the total to 55. The film’s offshore cume, including previews, reached $20.8 million. In the United States, the movie garnered over $12 million in previews alone. The strong performance of Dune: Part Two has solidified its position as the top U.S. title in all markets.
Top Performers in International Markets
Germany, Australia, Mexico, Poland, and Brazil emerged as the top five openers for Dune: Part Two in the international market. In Germany, the film captured an impressive 70% market share of the top 10 films, with a cume of $2.4 million, including previews. The results are comparable to other successful films like Oppenheimer and even surpass the opening day performances of The Batman, Dune, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, and Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049.
Australia also saw a strong opening for Dune: Part Two, with a cume of $1.3 million, including previews. The film claimed an 81% share of the top 10 films on its opening day, surpassing other comparable films like Oppenheimer, 2021’s Dune, Mission: Impossible 7, and Rise of the Beasts.
In Mexico, Dune: Part Two dominated the box office with $696,000 on Thursday, securing the number one spot. The film’s performance was 85% higher than Dune, marking Villeneuve’s biggest start ever in the Mexican market. Premium formats, such as IMAX and 4D, contributed significantly to the film’s success.
Poland also had a successful opening for Dune: Part Two, with $361,000 on a non-traditional Thursday release. While comparisons are challenging due to the uncommon release day, the film outperformed other films like Barbie’s extensive Thursday previews and Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, which also premiered on a Thursday.
