‘Dune’ director (justifiably?) criticizes Marvel films and gets the full load

Since this week Dune premiered in many countries, we heard a lot from the director. On Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049, Enemy) was also asked what he thinks of the many Marvel movies and his answer hasn’t exactly been met with applause.

“Too many Marvel movies are nothing more than a cut and paste job,” Villeneuve said in conversation with Elmundo. He also spoke about Marvel to Premiere:

“When we talk about Marvel, my point is that all these movies come from the same mold. Some filmmakers can add a little color to it, but they’re all cast in the same factory. Nothing bad about the movies themselves, but they have a format.”

Also during an interview with Harper’s Bazaar where Villeneuve was interviewed by Eternalsdirector Chloe Zhao (Nomadland) he was somewhat critical of Marvel films.

“I think it’s genius that Marvel has approached you, as you are aesthetically the opposite of it,” said Villeneuve. “I wonder how you’ve added life to a Marvel movie.”

A lot of criticism by fans and filmmakers
As with the film maker’s critique Martin Scorsese at the address of Marvel, the fans are now also about the piss. The director’s reaction is striking Neill Blomkamp (District 9) that Villeneuve on Twitter a “f**king asshole” calls.

But of course there are also fans who understand the. Check out some more moderate responses below.
