Since this week Dune premiered in many countries, we heard a lot from the director. On Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049, Enemy) was also asked what he thinks of the many Marvel movies and his answer hasn’t exactly been met with applause.
“Too many Marvel movies are nothing more than a cut and paste job,” Villeneuve said in conversation with Elmundo. He also spoke about Marvel to Premiere:
“When we talk about Marvel, my point is that all these movies come from the same mold. Some filmmakers can add a little color to it, but they’re all cast in the same factory. Nothing bad about the movies themselves, but they have a format.”
Also during an interview with Harper’s Bazaar where Villeneuve was interviewed by Eternalsdirector Chloe Zhao (Nomadland) he was somewhat critical of Marvel films.
“I think it’s genius that Marvel has approached you, as you are aesthetically the opposite of it,” said Villeneuve. “I wonder how you’ve added life to a Marvel movie.”
A lot of criticism by fans and filmmakers
As with the film maker’s critique Martin Scorsese at the address of Marvel, the fans are now also about the piss. The director’s reaction is striking Neill Blomkamp (District 9) that Villeneuve on Twitter a “f**king asshole” calls.
What a fucking asshole https://t.co/vXH13aIAA1

Feels kinda weird that last week Chloe Zhao was sing her praises of Dune and Denis. And the next week he shits on the franchise of her next movie. Kind of lame

I’m a fan of director Denis Villeneuve. But that’s beside the point. I could care less what he thinks about the #MCU.

But of course there are also fans who understand the. Check out some more moderate responses below.
You comic-book dudes are always taking this bait. Sure, Denis’ comments are hyperbolic and inaccurate, but can you blame him for making them? He and other well-established filmmakers are fighting to get their movies on big screens, so it’s understandable.

Yes, but complaining about Marvel movies being formulaic is itself formulaic
I’m tired of the discourse

There is some truth to it but imo much of it tends to be overblown. I will be honest a lot of these comments from Denis, Martin, Francis, etc. Is due to the huge success of the MCU. @ScholarsInk

Denis Villeneuve is not completely wrong, I like watching Marvel films but it is often the same thing and the directors are often yes man or when there is a good director behind the camera he is completely flange.
