And that’s a good thing, because Villeneuve says that despite the film’s big action sequences and war themes, his newest adaptation of Frank Herbert’s beloved sci-fi epic is first and foremost a love story.
The Quebec director said in an interview Thursday that “Dune 2” involved grueling filming in a scorching desert, with the construction of some 30 kilometers of temporary roads to transport craftsmen and equipment to sites in Jordan.
But Villeneuve believes it was important for him to do justice to the desert landscapes of the book, but also to the love story that blossomed between Paul Atréides (Timothée Chalamet) and Chani (Zendaya) – a love which he believes constitutes the heart of this story.
The film follows “Dune” (part one), released in 2021, and adds actors like Austin Butler, Christopher Walken and Léa Seydoux to an already rich cast, including Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin and Stellan Skarsgard.
The artistic direction is still ensured by another Quebecer, Patrice Vermette, who won the Oscar in 2022 for Villeneuve’s first “Dune”.
