A dump truck from Chartres Métropole struck, around 10:30 a.m., this Friday, August 25, 2023, two buildings located at the intersection of rue du bourg and rue aux Juifs, in the lower town of Chartres.
It was while wanting to badge at an access point to the pedestrian areas of the city that the driver lost control of his vehicle. According to the municipal police, he would have fallen from his truck by its door. Without brakes, the vehicle rolled down the rue du bourg in reverse, first hitting the window of a design office and then crashing into the restaurant Le Tajine de Chartres.

Two people evacuated
“Two people living on the 2nd floor of the building above the restaurant were evacuated. The truck was evacuated and a security perimeter was installed,” said Captain David Coeur-Joly, responsible for the intervention.
The couple of tenants were awakened by the shock. “It made a huge noise and the whole building shook,” says the tenant on the 2nd floor. They were offered emergency accommodation. “The road post probably slowed down the shock against the restaurant,” slips one of the municipal police officers. The glass of the study office was broken and the front of the restaurant is badly damaged, from the ground to the bottom of the first floor.
A study in progress
A building study was carried out jointly by the firefighters and the architects of the city of Chartres. “We are now moving towards a shoring operation in order to enter the building and check its structure”.

25 firefighters from Chartres and Châteaudun and 6 machines were mobilized during this intervention. Among them were members of the “clearance rescue” cell. “The two streets will be accessible again as soon as the studies of the structure of the building have been carried out if there is no risk of collapse”, adds the commander responsible for the intervention.
