Tom Dumoulin, king of the 2017 Giro d’Italia, had worn the Olympic silver in the time trial on July 28 last, beaten only by his teammate at Jumbo Visma Primoz Roglic on the Fuji circuit, in Japan. And he should have been one of Filippo Ganna’s main opponents for the world time trial in Bruges, Belgium, on Sunday 19 September, together with Van Aert, Kung, Evenepoel and Dennis. But this will not be the case: the season of the 30-year-old Dutchman, who should also have participated in the Lombardia on 9 October, ended early due to an accident in training in which he broke his right wrist.

It all happened on Thursday, the team broke the news almost at midnight. Tom was training in the Ardennes (in view of an event dedicated to him on October 3) but was hit by a car that was turning: first the bounce on the hood of the car, then the impact with the asphalt fatal for the wrist. “I’m really disappointed – said Dumoulin, world champion against the clock in 2017 – because my season is over. A shame because I was finally competitive again. I was sure I could run another month very well, even in this training I felt strong ”. For him in view of a surgery in Maastricht for the reduction of the fracture.
