National coach Dwight Lodeweges has again access to Denzel Dumfries in the Nations League match against Italy on Monday. The right back of PSV has been missing from the Orange selection in recent days because his son was born.
“If all goes well, Dumfries will close again on Saturday,” said interim national coach Dwight Lodeweges, who signed Hans Hateboer as right back on Friday against Poland (1-0 win). On Sunday he also called Kenny Tete – due to the absence of Dumfries -, so that he now has three right backs in the 23-man selection.
It is not yet clear whether Dumfries will also play. In any case, the question is whether Lodeweges can start with the same players against Italy, because the recovery time is only two days. A number of players have played little in recent months due to the corona crisis and still lack match rhythm.
“That is why I actually wanted to change a bit more against Poland”, says Lodeweges, who had Donny van de Beek come in fifteen minutes before time and Luuk de Jong was only allowed to make his appearance in injury time. “I hoped to be able to save some guys, but the booth didn’t allow that.”
The kick-off with the Orange against Italy is on Monday at 8.45 pm in the Johan Cruijff ArenA. The Italians started the Nations League adventure with a 1-1 draw in Florence against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Friday, so that the Netherlands now leads the group A.
