Duisburg. A total of 2,695 euros will be made available for reforestation of the eucalyptus forests. The zoo team collected the species protection euros on ‘Save the Koala Day’ this year.
On July 14, 2024, Duisburg Zoo focused on protecting the fluffy marsupials from Down Under as part of ‘Save the Koal Day’. The promise: For every zoo annual pass sold on the day of the campaign, a eucalyptus tree will be planted in Australia. All species protection income and the proceeds from the species protection euro from this day will also be used 100% for koala protection. Duisburg Zoo is now providing the organization ‘One Tree Planted’ with a total of 2,695 euros for reforestation.
“Every day we inspire people to love animals and want to motivate them to protect species together with our charges. With the species protection euro we are building a bridge between the animal experience in the zoo and species protection activities worldwide,” says zoo director Astrid Stewin about the commitment. Reforestation of the Australian bushland with eucalyptus trees is important because the plants serve as habitat and food for the marsupials. The animals do not eat anything other than eucalyptus leaves. The lack of intact eucalyptus forests is therefore one reason why the koala is listed on the so-called Red List as an endangered species.
