The Duisburg sports year 2023 is all about canoeing! Several high-class canoeing events will take place in Duisburg this year. At the events, the Duisburg canoe clubs are presenting their wide range of offers for the first time with a joint appearance. The canoe association NRW eV, the Stadtsportbund Duisburg, the canoe regatta club Duisburg eV, and DuisburgSport together with the Duisburg school sports department jointly founded the project “Duisburg paddelt!” 2020 and set themselves the goal of promoting canoeing in Duisburg, especially in the run-up to the To sustainably promote and further develop the Canoe and Paracanoe World Championships 2023.
“We specifically support major sporting events, such as the Rhine-Ruhr Finals 2023 and the 2023 Canoe and Paracanoe World Championships, in order to promote sports in the region in the long term and generate positive effects there in terms of sports development and the recruitment of young talent,” says Andrea Milz, State Secretary for Sport and Volunteering of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia. Four partners have joined forces for the project. “So far, this is a novelty among the funded projects,” continued State Secretary Milz, referring to the special importance of canoeing in Duisburg. “Canoeing traditionally plays a very important role in Duisburg, not least because of the excellent framework conditions for high-class events such as the Canoe World Championships taking place in August,” says Christoph Gehrt-Butry, Deputy Managing Director of the Duisburg City Sports Association.
“It was therefore natural for us from the outset to take part in the “Duisburg paddelt!” project,” Gehrt-Butry clarifies. This year, the “Duisburg paddelt!” campaign will be visible among the numerous canoeing highlights. “We want to show what makes our sport so fascinating and this year we will be paddling with the Duisburg campaign! being visible. In this way, we would also like to focus on the excellent work of the canoeing clubs in and around Duisburg,” summarizes Jens Lüthge, Managing Director of the Canoe Association NRW eV.
In the past year, the clubs have already received support to optimize their organizational structure and to train additional volunteers. In addition, a special focus was placed on the topic of “digitization” in order to make the clubs fit for the future. This year, people interested in water sports have several opportunities to look at the dynamic and fascinating water sports, try them out or find out more about the club’s work and exercise options in the Duisburg area.
On 06/17 & 06/18/2023 finds that NRW Canoe Festival on the Dreieckswiese at the Duisburg regatta track, Kruppstrasse 30b. There, beginners can also get to know canoeing. It continues with the finals in 2023 Rhein-Ruhr – from 06.07.-09.07.2023 in the inner harbor of Duisburg. The German championships are held there in the canoe disciplines canoe sprint, dragon boat, stand-up paddling and speed canoe polo. Here, too, there will be a “taster paddling offer” for young and old. The highlight of the season is then the ICF Canoe Racing & Para-Canoe World Championship 20th23 from 23.08.-27.08.2023 on the Duisburg regatta course. Athletes from all over the world then compete in Duisburg Wedau. During the competition days there will also be a colorful supporting program around the regatta course.
