Japanese automotive company Nissan Motor Co. announced on Friday that due to the global semiconductor shortage, the launch of the new electric car model “Ariya”, which was originally scheduled for the summer, is postponed until winter.
The carmaker had previously planned that the fully electric model presented last July will go on sale in Japan in the middle of this year, but will also arrive in Europe, North America and China by the end of the year.
But on Friday, Nissan said customers in Japan could now order the model for winter deliveries, but information on entering other markets is currently unpublished.
A spokeswoman for the company confirmed that the decision was linked to a global semiconductor deficit that had affected automakers around the world.
The Ariya will be Nissan’s first all-inclusive electric car for the general market since Leaf’s debut a decade ago.
The semiconductor deficit was caused by a significant increase in demand for consumer electronics during the coronavirus pandemic, making it difficult for semiconductor manufacturers to produce the required volume.
