The increase in cases among the “known” and the constant reminder of the health authorities to update their indispensable vaccination reinforcements against covid-19 finally seem to be working: this week the “record” number of cases vaccinated during the whole of the second semester of 2022. In fact, according to a Twitter post by provincial senator Martín Barrionuevo – one of the most esteemed observers of the numbers of the pandemic –, last Tuesday more than one hundred thousand people across the country. Just two weeks ago the daily average was just around thirty thousand daily doses.
Although the daily number of vaccinations has tripled, we are still far from the best moments of the campaign: just a year ago, in January 2022, almost 600,000 people were vaccinated a day.
According to a statement published by the Argentine Society of Vaccination and Epidemiology (SAVE), the application of booster doses is essential to be truly protected. According to its president, infectious disease specialist Florencia Cahn, “four months after the last dose, protection against the virus is decreasing. That is why we ask the population to apply the corresponding booster dose according to each case, age and health condition and not wait for the arrival of any other vaccine”, he insisted. And he stressed that this is particularly important “for the over-50s and for people at risk”.
The reference and the urgency are framed in a recent technical discussion in which some experts have proposed that those who have already had some booster inoculations can await the arrival of a new generation of more modern and effective vaccines. But industry sources told PROFILE that this situation could be delayed until well into 2023. And the same labs confirmed that people shouldn’t wait for future approval of future “bivalent” vaccines, but that the consensus of infectious disease specialists agree that boosters should be received four months after the previous dose.
The application of reinforcements becomes particularly important given the general epidemiological numbers: according to the Ministry of Health, a 56% increase in covid-19 cases was recorded in the last week of November. Given the beginning of summer and the end of the year holidays, there is a risk that the situation in which a peak of 140,000 infected per day was reached in January 2022 could be repeated.
Furthermore, as regards anticovid vaccination, the Ministry’s data show the shortcomings in Argentina: so far 41,053,190 people have received a single dose, 37,906,316 have received two doses, 30,158,543 vaccinated with a third dose or first booster and finally 28,479,986 vaccinated with a fourth dose or second booster. But this situation worsens if analyzed by age group, among the over eighty year olds only 58.9% received the first booster and in the over fifty year olds it reaches 71.8%. Seek reinforcement.
