In total, there were 399 families who gave up the dream of having their own home in Valledupar in 2023. 82% of these withdrawals correspond to Social Interest Housing (VIS), this is because 69% are due to high interest rates in mortgage loans and changes in the Mi Casa Ya program.
The figure is overwhelming for the real estate sector brought together by the Colombian Chamber of Construction, Camacol, taking into account that the decrease in sales registered last year represented a reduction of $146 billion pesos that households stopped investing. Added to this is that between January and November 2023, the square meters licensed for housing registered a drop of 32%.
“When a family takes the step to acquire a house or an apartment, many positive things happen: a sector is activated that moves the economy and generates jobs,” said the manager of Camacol Cesar, Hernán Felipe Araújo Ariza.
Against this backdrop, it is important to highlight that the construction sector generated 15,013 jobs in 2023, but with the reduction in sales, the concern is that these jobs will be put at risk in 2024 and 2025.
Camacol and its members continue to work for economic reactivation and the materialization of the dream of having their own home for hundreds of families.
