Due to inflation, a famous New York restaurant is closing down

Increase in wagesexponential costs of raw materials… Many restaurants had to go out of business, including famous establishments, the image of The Loeb Boathouse Central Park in New York, United States, reports the New York Times last July 21. The one located on the east shore of Central Park Lake, which was founded in 1872, will close its doors on October 16, to the great disappointment of its customers and its 163 employees. The decision was made because “it’s a very difficult place to manage” due to “the location, the seasonality, its access and the expense”, explained Dean J. Poll, owner of the establishment since 2000, to our colleagues. The place is not accessible to the public by car. But it was above all the general rise in prices that decided Dean J.Poll to make this radical choice, with inflation at 9.1% in the country.

The Central Park establishment had already closed its doors, temporarily, for almost a year between March 2020 and March 2021. The Boathouse had become an emblematic place in the city, and offered dishes such as lobster, and the essentials burgers and cheesecakes. He had mostly become famous since appearing in mainstream films, such as in When Harry Met Sallyor in the series Sex and the City. The Boathouse attracted tourists and New York high society as much as nature enthusiasts and bird watchers. But as our colleagues explain, the restaurant has had several lives: it would now be looking for a new buyer, enough to give it yet another… new breath.
