Due to Covid-19, three Latvian team games were transferred to the joint basketball league

The games of Ventspils, Ogres and Liepāja in the Latvian-Estonian Basketball League (LIBL) have been postponed due to Covid-19 cases, informs the Latvian Basketball Union (LBS).

In total, five LIBL games have been postponed indefinitely: “Ventspils” – “Valmiera Glass” / “Vidzeme University College” (scheduled for January 4), “Ogre” – Rakvere “Tarvas” (January 5), “University of Tartu” / “Maks & Moorits” – “Ventspils” (January 8), Rakvere “Tarvas” – “Liepāja” (January 8) and “Ogre” – “Liepāja” (January 12). As Kristaps Janičenoks, the director of the Latvian basketball leagues, explained to LETA, the teams in Ventspils, Ogre and Liepāja are the ones that cannot play away at the moment, taking into account the epidemiological safety regulations. Teams have Covid-19 cases, which for the time being prevent them from playing games and training.

Of the Latvian teams, “VEF Rīga” with 13 wins in 14 games takes the first place in the tournament table, “Ventspils” has won in nine out of ten games and is the third, “Ogre” has six wins in 12 matches, “University of Latvia” with five and Liepāja ”With three wins in 11 games is immediately behind the first eight, but Valmiera with two wins in 14 duels is in the last, 14th position.

In the LIBL main tournament, the teams will play a two-round tournament until March 20. The top eight will compete in the quarter-finals, with the winners determined by the sum of two games. LIBL champions are expected to be determined in the final four tournament. The season will end with the elimination games of the Latvian and Estonian championships. 14 teams – six Latvian teams – “VEF Rīga”, “Ogre”, “Ventspils”, “Valmiera Glass” / “Vidzeme University”, “University of Latvia” and “Liepāja” participate in the LIBL championship in the season of 2021/22, as also eight Estonian teams – Tallinn “Kalev” / ”Cramo”, Rapla “Avis Utilitas”, “Parnu Sadam”, “University of Tartu” / “Maks & Moorits”, Rakvere “Tarvas”, Tallinn “Kalev”, “TalTech” / Optibet and Häme’s Viimsi.
