Due to COVID-19, Apple would bring back its touch ID for the iPhone 13

From the iPhone X from 2017 onwards, Apple had withdrawn fingerprint recognition (touch ID) for all of its high-end devices. However, the next generation of these mobiles could mark the return of the finger unlocking that many expected.

For the last four years, the apple company had been betting on face ID – one of the best facial recognition unlocks on the market – as the only way to unblock its phones. Although at the beginning of 2020 there were rumors about a possible return of the touch ID, these were denied with a iPhone 12 which did not include it.

However, Front Page News (one of the largest information leakers in the Apple ecosystem) recently assured that the fingerprint sensor will return for the iPhone to be launched in 2021, although with the exception that this time it would be located under the screen.

What leads Apple to this decision?

The face ID had become one of the main security standards for iPhone, with sensors that recognized faces in a three-dimensional way. This virtue became a disadvantage due to COVID-19, which spread the mandatory use of masks among users and made facial unlocking an uncomfortable process. This is due to the need to remove the mask every time you want to access the phone.

In that context, Apple would decide to implement an under-screen fingerprint lock that could change the overall appearance of the computer. By not requiring more of all the sensors used for face ID, the Cupertino phones could decrease the size of the notch on the front that so identified the latest phones from the firm.

To differentiate itself from Android smartphones that have already implemented fingerprint sensors for a couple of years, it will be necessary to wait if Apple decides to additionally apply some other biometric unlocking system.
