Now the Eurovision Song Contest is also falling victim to the corona virus: the 65th edition of the largest music competition in the world will be postponed by one year, as the organizers say on Twitter. The ESC should have been held in Rotterdam (Netherlands) from May 12th to 16th, 2020.

“We deeply regret that we have to announce the cancellation of this year’s Eurovision Song Contest,” write those responsible. Many options had been examined in the past few weeks in order to get the traditional European event over the stage again this year. “Nevertheless, the uncertainties about the spread of the corona virus are forcing us from the European Broadcasting Corporation to refrain from hosting this year.” Since 1956, the Eurovision Song Contest has been broadcast every year in the parlors of European TV viewers. This year, for the first time in the 64-year history, the plug is pulled.

Significance for Swiss participants still unclear
What the cancellation of the Swiss contribution from Freiburg’s Gjon’s Tears (21) means is not yet known. It is always a shame: In the betting odds, the Swiss opponent with his song “Répondez-moi” was in second place. In addition, a possible triumph would have been in 32-year rhythm with the victories of Lys Assia (1924-2018) and Celine Dion (51). This beautiful coincidence is now nothing.

For Reto Peritz, Swiss ESC delegation leader and member of the ESC Reference Group, which ultimately sealed the cancellation, the decision was a difficult step, “It is very sad for the artists, the fans and all those involved, but it is absolutely right in view the current situation, »he says when asked by BLICK. «Health comes first. We will inform you as soon as the next steps are known. »

The event will be postponed to the next year
With the cancellation, the restructuring and planning immediately begin to bring the music event back on the screen next year. The organizers: “We are heartbroken that the Eurovision Song Contest cannot take place in May, but we are confident that the entire Eurovision family all over the world will stand for love and support for one another in this difficult time.”
