Duda misses Absolute in presidential election in Poland

Even if his result is somewhat better than in the exit polls, Poland’s conservative President Andrzej Duda missed the absolute majority in the presidential election. After counting more than 87 percent of the votes, Duda comes to 45.2 percent. He now has to run into the runoff against his liberal challenger Rafal Trzaskowski. Trzaskowski therefore accounted for 28.9 percent.

Duda won at least the first round

Duda had seen initial forecasts at just under 42 percent and Trzaskowski at 30.4 percent. On July 12, both candidates must go to the runoff. A defeat by Duda would significantly weaken the national conservative government party Law and Justice (PiS).

Independent candidate Rafal Holownia was third with just under 13.7 percent. According to the commission, the turnout was 53.3 percent.
