Duda and Trzaskowski in the second round (Ipsos poll)

Outgoing President of Poland Andrzej Duda will face his main rival Rafal Trzaskowski, candidate for the main opposition party, the Civic Platform (PO), in the second round of the country’s presidential election, according to an Ipsos ballot box poll. published Sunday evening, quoted by the Polish News Agency.

According to Ipsos, Mr. Duda obtained 41.8% of the votes, while Mr. Trzaskowski, who is also mayor of the capital Warsaw, obtained 30.4%.

According to Polish electoral laws, as none of the 11 candidates running won more than 50% of the vote, a second round will be organized on July 12.

Mr. Duda, supported by the conservative Law and Justice party, and Mr. Trzaskowski, a Christian Democrat, will seek to recover the voters of the other nine candidates for the second round.

“I thank everyone who voted for me, but I also thank everyone who went to the polls,” said Mr. Duda in his speech after the vote.

Mr. Trzaskowski, however, criticized Mr. Duda and the ruling party, Law and Justice. “It will not be a choice between Andrzej Duda and Rafal Trzaskowski, but a choice between an open Poland and a Poland which, unfortunately, seeks an enemy and prefers to divide the population”.

The presidential election was originally scheduled for May 10, before being postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting containment.

To date, Poland has a total of 33,907 COVID-19 infections, with 1,438 deaths, according to the daily update released by the Ministry of Health on Sunday morning.
