Mexican Patricio “Pato” O’Ward won the first race of a doubleheader at the track Milwaukee Mileand won his third oval victory in his career and first since 2022 at Iowa Speedway.
The Arrow McLaren driver beat Australian Will Power (Penske) and Conor Daly (Juncos Hollinger).
For the Mexican, it is also his third win this season after St. Pete and Mid-Ohio. He had already announced last week that, with no more chances for the drivers’ title, he would focus on winning races, and he has fulfilled his promise in just seven days.
“It was a tough weekend last weekend, it’s a way to get rid of that thorn that we had stuck in our side. The car changed a lot from the start to the end of the race, it’s time to enjoy it today and tomorrow we’re back in the fight,” said a smiling O’Ward as soon as he got out of his car.
Earlier this week, O’Ward waded into a controversy by asking IndyCar officials why they allowed NASCAR to beat them to the punch in organizing a race in Mexico City next summer.
Originally from Monterrey, “Pato” is the most popular driver in IndyCar and is eager to race in his country. Instead, it was NASCAR that announced this week that it will hold a race in the Mexican capital in June. The Monterrey native regretted it, considering that there is no longer room for his category in the country where he was born.
The situation escalated when IndyCar CEO Mark Miles said promoters in Mexico City felt the series and O’Ward were not popular enough. to ensure more than just a lease agreement for the race to take place.
