Sarah Ferguson (63) is today a mature and confident woman, but getting there has cost blood, sweat and tears, many, many tears.
Dropped: – A great sadness
– I know what it means to struggle with weight. My parents divorced when I was 12 and I thought it was my fault. Then I started comfort eating, she revealed in an article in The Sun newspaper two years ago.
In fact, it was only after she had to hastily remove a breast as an adult due to cancer that she was able to accept herself.

Unknown friendship
As a young girl, Sarah was active and in good shape, despite being a few kilos heavier than average. And the battle against the kilos had already begun.
– I gained weight, then lost it again. And then I went up again. I didn’t want to tell my mother that I was angry and sad that she had left me. Instead, I consoled myself with sausages, butter and boiled eggs, Sarah told me in 2016.

The lively redhead had many good friends, including Lady Diana Spencer, who would later marry into the British royal family.
It was Diana who in 1985 invited Sarah to the fabled Ascot horse race, and who introduced her to her brother-in-law, Prince Andrew (63).

Always compared
The two fell head over heels for each other, and after the engagement in March 1986, Sarah became the sole property of Sarah. By then, the British had followed Diana closely for a number of years, and the new duchess was measured against Diana in everything she did and undertook.
Appearance and appearance were also compared.

Princess Diana suffered from the eating disorder bulimia, which made her very thin. While Sarah’s comfort eating meant that she always weighed a little more than she would like.
The British press in particular was very insensitive at this time, and left nothing in between when discussing weight and appearance.

Ugly nickname
“The Duchess of York” was quickly renamed “The Duchess of Pork”, “Hertuginne Gris” in Norwegian. She was also maliciously called “Fat Fergie”, or in Norwegian “Feite Fergie”.
After the shock pictures: – The queen made contact
This led to even more comfort eating, and even greater dissatisfaction with one’s own appearance. The fact that Prince Andrew was away from home a lot due to his military career did not make the situation any better for Sarah.

– The more upset I got that Andrew was gone, the bigger I got. I drowned my sorrows in mayonnaise, sausages and sandwiches from Marks & Spencer. The press wrote that 82 percent of men would choose a goat over me. It was horrible, the more I read the more I believed I was a disaster, she said in the post in The Sun.
Was Princess Caroline’s great love killed?
The couple divorced as friends in 1996, and Sarah was allowed to keep the title of duchess – but had to start working for a living.
It was the start of a career as a yo-yo dieter and spokesperson for various diets. Time and again, Sarah has gone out in the media and said that she has finally cracked the code on how to get to her ideal weight.

Slimming club
It began in 1997, when she became a spokeswoman for the Weight Watchers diet club, after losing many kilos with the help of their strict program.
“Rebuke” the wife: – You are crazy
– Their points system has changed my life, because I could now eat well at the same time as I could change the habits that were the basis of my lifelong struggle with weight, she said proudly.

But in 2005, Weight Watchers ceased to exist. Then Sarah threw herself into a quick cure – a three-week stay at the exclusive Mayr Health Spa in Austria. Here you survive on 600 kilocalories a day, and each mouthful must be chewed 40 times before it can be swallowed.
– The Mayr clinic has given me my life back – or maybe just shown me my life. Thank you very much, she said happily.

In 2014, she went to a tea manufacturer and had them make dessert-flavoured teas – including the flavors of roll cake, rhubarb pie and chocolate cake. The following year, she partnered with the manufacturer of a blender, and sold a blender set with recipe book on her website.
Reveals secret lover
– This is the solution for how to change one’s behaviour. I have lost 25 kilos, and kept it off for quite some time. It’s absolutely fantastic, she said enthusiastically.
In 2016, she revealed that the key was a diet that included tomatoes, eggs, mayonnaise and tangerines. This is how it continued. And last year, Sarah told us that she had finally found the solution. By then she had lost 22 kilos with the help of a special low-carb diet combined with exercise.

Happy in itself
Now Duchess Sarah runs a podcast together with a good friend, “Tea Talks with the Duchess and Sarah”. Here she recently talked about what it was like to struggle with self-image.
– When I look back, I realize that I had “great legs and looked good. At the time, I didn’t like myself. I think it was because I was always compared to Diana, and I started to believe what the press wrote about me, that I wasn’t good enough, she says in the podcast.

It was in an earlier episode of this podcast that she told the world that she was affected by breast cancer. And now this autumn, she told how this life-threatening situation led to a drastic change in her life.
Sarah’s doctors recommended that she remove the entire cancerous breast, first and last. Sarah is said to have been shocked at first, but after regaining her composure she wanted to get the operation over with as quickly as possible.
Fears Meghan will brainwash Eugenie
In June, the Duchess underwent surgery at the private King Edward VII Hospital in London. Five days later she went home to The Royal Lodge at Windsor to rest and recuperate.
Fergie still lives under the same roof with her ex-husband Prince Andrew (63), although it has been well over 25 years since they separated.

Huge scar
In the season’s last episode of “Tea Talks”, an open-hearted Sarah says that the operation has now led to her finally accepting herself.
– You get a huge scar, but you like yourself. A lot! Now I’m myself, and I’m just so happy to be myself, she says enthusiastically.
Family crisis after rape allegations
She learned that from a very special woman – her ex-mother-in-law.
– That was the very last thing the queen said to me. “Just be yourself, Sarah.” She got so annoyed when I wasn’t myself. And that was perhaps when I got into trouble, continues the 63-year-old.
Now Sarah is enjoying life, surrounded by her two daughters, Princess Beatrice (35) and Princess Eugenie (33), and her three grandchildren – Beatrice’s daughter Sienna (2), and Eugenie’s sons August (2) and Ernest (1/2 years) .

– Do you have to remove a body part to wake up? Wake up so you stop worrying, hating yourself, doubting yourself, not liking yourself? Is that what it takes, she asks rhetorically.
– To be completely honest, I actually think I was so lucky, she says.
