More than MotoGP it could be renamed Moto-Ducati. The excessive power of the Borgo Panigale company, which has boasted the constructors’ title for four years in a row (this year with 700 points won), is increasingly accentuated over the giants of the Land of the Rising Sun. While the other Italian motor manufacturer, Aprilia, was overtaken in the standings (370 to 326 points) only by the Austrian KTM, but in the Italy-Japan challenge it placed itself behind the giants Yahama and Honda.

Ducati records

The victory of Pecco Bagnaia in 2022 and in 2023 it will bring significant economic benefits to Ducati (which belongs to Audi AG which is part of the Volkswagen Group). Last year, successes on the track drove the accounts and for the first time in history, in 2022, Ducati exceeded one billion euros in turnover, with revenues of 1.089 billion euros (up 24% compared to 2021) and with a profit of 109 million, as well as a record of 61,562 motorcycles sold. Numbers that according to estimates will be exceeded in 2023.

Ducati not only confirmed first place in the riders’ standings with Bagnaia (on track with the Lenovo team together with Enea Bastianini) but also occupied the other steps of the podium, with the Spaniard Martin (Ducati Pramac Racing) and the other Italian Bezzecchi (Ducati VR46 Racing, owned by Valentino Rossi). In fact, out of the 20 bikes lined up on the starting grid this year, eight were Ducati powered. In addition to the official team (Lenovo) and the two already mentioned, those of the Gresini Racing team also took to the track.

Aprilia

The other Italian manufacturer, Aprilia of the Piaggio Group, fielded the official team (with the bikes ridden by the Spaniards Maverick Vinales and Aleix Espargaró) and supported the RNF Racing team. Even in the case of Piaggio, 2022 was an unprecedented year in terms of production: the year closed with consolidated revenues of 2.087 billion euros (for the first time above the two billion threshold and an increase of 25 % compared to 2021) and with a net profit of 84.9 million euros, selling 625 thousand vehicles worldwide.

The two Japanese motorcycles and Ktm

Of course, the economic numbers are still distant from those of the three historic Japanese “big” MotoGP players. Yamaha Motor, for 2022, communicated a net turnover of 2,248.5 billion yen (equal to just under 16 billion euros), while Honda more than 14.5 billion yen (over 100 billion euros). Furthermore, in the case of Honda, revenue forecasts for 2023 exceed 17.4 billion yen globally. As regards the Austrian Kmt, in 2022 the Group increased its turnover by 19% reaching 2.4 billion euros, after having exceeded over two billion for the first time in 2021.
