Police are working to establish a motive, but do not believe it is terrorism-related, reports Irish national broadcaster RTE.
A police spokesman said the victims included an adult man, an adult woman and three small children.
One five-year-old girl was seriously injured, while the other two children – a six-year-old girl and a five-year-old boy – were less seriously injured. A woman was also seriously injured.
A police spokesman said police were following “a definite line of inquiry”.
A 50- to 60-year-old man was arrested in connection with the attack, who was seriously injured. He was restrained by passers-by before the police arrived.
In the evening, crowds of protesters began to gather at the scene, with violence breaking out in places. Police used batons and shields, protesters damaged several police cars.
Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar announced that additional police forces had been dispatched.
