Dublin –
Kota Dublin starting to get irritated by the activities of tourists who act lewdly on a statue. The statue is called Molly Malone.
Reporting from Independent UK on Tuesday (5/3), Dublin City Council was drawing up new measures to protect the statue of Molly Malone. Since ancient times, this statue has been one of the attractions most visited by tourists.
This statue, which is located outside the Dublin Tourist Office, was on Grafton Street until 1988. This bronze statue is the work of Irish artist Jeanne Rynhart.
Molly Malone is a character from Irish folklore of a song. He worked as a ivory seller selling shells using a cart at the fair town of Dublin.
According to local belief, whoever touches Molly’s breasts will have good luck for 7 years. It is not clear where this belief came from, but tourists were very interested and started touching, kissing and fondling the statue’s chest.
Residents’ unrest spilled over last year, the statue was vandalized with the words “Please don’t (touch), TY (Thank You)”.
Ray Yeates, arts officer at Dublin City Council, said the government would take legal action to punish those who did lewd things to Molly.
“Dublin City Council is aware of reports of people touching Molly Malone statutes. It is not beneficial for this type of artwork to be handled and may cause wear or damage,” he explained.
Furthermore, he said that Molly Malone was an important figure in Dublin folklore. The statue should be treated with respect.
“The council is considering what actions might be effective in protecting the law and has recently made repairs due to vandalism,” he concluded.
