Anthony Dunne, a 63-year-old man from Dublin, has been given a suspended sentence after admitting that he conned five immigrants out of hundreds of euros to rent a property on Gardiner Street in the city. Dunne gave his victims keys and receipts to the property before disappearing. However, upon their arrival, they discovered that they had been scammed after the true owner of the property alerted the police. All of the victims were immigrants who had been living in overcrowded accommodation previously. One victim had handed over all of the money he had, leaving him with only a tenner to his name. The judge, Bryan Smyth, called the action a “distasteful thing to do” and noted it was a serious offence. Dunne was handed an eight-month-long suspended sentence.
