The veteran general has served as commander of the Russian aerospace forces since 2017. In the same year he was awarded the title of Hero of Russia for his role in military operations in Syria.

Previously, he also took part in hostilities in Chechnya.

According to various media reports, Surovikin has been dubbed “General of Armageddon” by his colleagues, citing his uncompromising and unorthodox approach to military operations.
