Dubai Metro Blue Line Officially Approved; It will open in 2029

Dubai: Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, approved the Dubai Metro Blue Line. The largest public transport project in the city has been announced. The project cost is 18 billion dirhams ($4.9 billion). This is a massive project that will benefit lakhs of commuters in the city.

The 30-km stretch will have 14 metro stations of international standards. Half of the route will be underground. The subway comes in the busiest parts of the city. In some places the depth is up to 70 meters. 14.5 km surface road will be constructed on pillars and other.

Sheikh Mohammed noted on X-Platform (old Twitter) that the new line will serve 320,000 passengers a day. The tender process will be completed this year and it will be fully operational in 2029. The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) will open the tender and award the contract next year. The drilling work of the underground passage is scheduled for 2025. It is also expected that the test trip can be conducted in 2028.

Sheikh Mohammed explained that this is a dream project that fulfills the existing urban travel needs and envisions the future development of Dubai. The route will pass through urban areas such as Marsa, Dubai Creek, Festival City, International City, Al Rashidiya, Al Warqa, Mirdif, as well as Silicon Oasis and Academic City.

The new Blue Line will connect the existing metro line. Connects with Red and Green metro lines. All five underground stations will be on the Blue Line.

Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance of the UAE inaugurated the Dubai Metro Blue Line project at a ceremony held at Dubai Creek Harbour. Sheikh Maktoum said the leadership is committed to developing the best infrastructure that not only raises the city’s global standards but also aligns with the emirate’s sustainable development goals.

Launched in 2009, the Dubai Metro has become a favorite mode of travel for city dwellers and visitors alike. The metro accounts for 60 percent of the total use of all public transport modes in Dubai, including buses, Dubai Trams and marine transport lines. As of 2023, an average of 685,000 people travel per day. Accuracy is 99.7 percent. It is also the longest driverless metro network in the world. At present, there are 53 stations on the 90 km long route.
