Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi discussed, on Wednesday, with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abi Ahmed, “ways to settle the crisis in Sudan, strengthen bilateral relations between Egypt and Ethiopia, and the issue of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.”
The Egyptian presidency said, in a statement on its website, that “Sisi received Abi Ahmed, who heads his country’s delegation at the summit of Sudan’s neighboring countries, which is being hosted by Cairo, to discuss ways to end the current conflict, its negative repercussions on neighboring countries, and to develop effective mechanisms with the participation of neighboring countries to settle things.” The crisis in Sudan in a peaceful way, in coordination with other regional and international tracks to resolve the crisis.
The statement added, “The meeting dealt with bilateral relations between the two countries, and the issue of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.”
It is noteworthy that the Egyptian presidency had announced, on Sunday, in a statement, that Egypt would host the summit conference of Sudan’s neighboring countries “to take steps to resolve the crisis and spare the blood of the Sudanese people, spare them the negative effects they are exposed to, preserve the Sudanese state and its capabilities, and limit the continuation of the grave effects of the crisis.” neighboring countries and the security and stability of the region as a whole.
In mid-April, widespread clashes broke out between the Sudanese army forces and the paramilitary “Quick Support” forces in Khartoum and several other Sudanese states and cities, and the battles are still continuing today, killing and injuring thousands, and displacing hundreds of thousands.
And the Ethiopian Prime Minister had said, in previous statements regarding the Renaissance Dam, that work on building the dam “is being carried out in a way that takes into account the concerns raised by the downstream countries, Sudan and Egypt.”
Abiy Ahmed added, in his speech to members of the Ethiopian parliament, that “the two downstream countries, Sudan and Egypt, are our brothers and neighbors, and because of the concern they have expressed about building the Renaissance Dam, we are carrying out the work with care and taking into account the concerns they raise,” according to the Ethiopian News Agency.
