At the Brit Awards (the English version of the Grammys and one of the most coveted music awards in the world) Dua Lipa won her seventh statuette. Dressed in a black leather suit, she took to the stage thanking her entire team. And the makeup, despite her emotion, didn’t move an inch. A nice debut, therefore, in the role of YSL Beauty make-up testimonial. Not a real debut with the maison as she has been the face of the Libre perfume for five years, but it is her first time
with the new line of LoveShine lipsticks.
She called herself an “alpha woman.” How do you become one? Some advice?
“The power of women lies in duality: in knowing how to be strong but also vulnerable. The idea that we only have to appear strong is toxic. We must give ourselves the freedom to feel any emotion, be convinced of who we are and proud of what we do. For For me this means being “alpha”.
Do you remember the first time you put on makeup? How old was she?
“I started playing with my mother’s make-up as a child. But the first time I actually put on make-up I was 15, and it was mascara. It made me feel so good. But then it took me a lot of time to really tune in and figure out what worked for me.”
Do you like makeup now?
“Yes. And I love both the glamorous one when I have a red carpet or a concert. And the one I do on my own, every day: foundation, mascara, lipstick, blush and I’m already out of the house.”
Favorite lipstick shade?
“LoveShine 15. I always end up choosing nudes and browns because they enhance my colors. The nice thing is that this looks like a lipstick but it’s a lip oil, it colors and when you reapply it it gives a glossy effect.”
When she performed Libre, the YSL Beauty perfume, she sang to the tune of “Freedom” by George Michael. Now the new campaign has her song “Houdini” as its soundtrack. How come?
“It’s a perfect song. Houdini is a character linked to the world of magic and I’ve always been fascinated by the fact that he was an escapologist.”
What are you running from?
“I believe it is important in life to learn to understand yourself, to know what you deserve, what makes you feel really good, what your place in the world is. Once you understand this, you also know what you have to escape from and what to let go of. It is a path of realization
and Houdini is the right metaphor.”
What is magic for you?
“It’s everywhere. When I’m on stage the adrenaline and energy are pure magic. But also when you manage to connect with people who are different from you, it’s a kind of magic.”
Why did you choose to have red hair?
“When I was recording the new song, I noticed that I kept coming across red objects and felt that that color matched the song. So I dyed my hair.”
What is freedom for you?
“The power to express myself authentically. It is important to be able to choose when to be hyper-feminine and when to have a masculine tone. You should never close yourself off in aesthetic standards.”
For a couple of years he has also hosted a podcast in which he hosts many famous people. Do you like doing interviews?
“I love learning new things and interviews are definitely an experience that sparks my curiosity. I wanted to call the podcast At your service because those chats with celebrities like Tim Cook, Elton John, Billie Eilish are a way to make the listener understand that everyone travels on a different journey.”
The most exciting one?
“My guests spoil me by telling their stories in a unique and special way. But I enjoyed talking to Esther Perel (psychotherapist, ed.), Pedro Almodovar, of whom I am a big fan, and Greta Gerwig with whom I would have talked for hours.”
Is it easier to be interviewed or to interview?
“In the first case I’m talking about myself and something I know very well. In the second, however, I have to prepare, do research, read all the other previous interviews with the same character: it’s definitely more challenging.”
Returning to your role as testimonial: do you like highlighting your lips like this? It’s a very sensual gesture.
“Actually, lipstick is, in general, my favorite makeup product. Even when I don’t feel like wearing makeup, I still wear lipstick. So I feel very comfortable having my lips so bright, so at the center of attention It couldn’t have gone better than becoming the face of LoveShine.”
