DTI and DA Intensify market Inspections to Ensure Affordable Essential Goods
In a concerted effort to safeguard consumer welfare, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the Department of Agriculture (DA) conducted a joint market inspection at the Mutya ng pasig Mega Market and a nearby mart on January 16, 2025. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to ensure the availability of reasonably priced essential goods across the contry.
The inspection follows a similar activity in Quezon City on January 10, where officials monitored the supply and prices of basic necessities and prime commodities (BNPCs). DTI Secretary Cristina A. Roque, who also chairs the National Price Coordinating Council (NPCC), emphasized the goverment’s commitment to maintaining stable supply and affordable prices for consumers.“The DTI is dedicated to ensuring affordable access to essential goods for every Filipino in a ‘Bagong Pilipinas.’ Through thorough price and supply monitoring nationwide and strengthened inter-agency collaboration, we are actively working to protect consumers and promote fair competition in the marketplace,” said secretary Roque.
During the inspection, the team reviewed 99 stock keeping units (SKUs) to ensure compliance with the Price act and the Consumer Act, particularly focusing on accurate price tags and proper product labeling. Products inspected included bread, noodles, canned fish, canned milk, coffee, and laundry soap.
Rice affordability remains a critical concern, prompting the joint team to inspect three rice stalls in the market. This effort is part of ongoing initiatives to ensure a stable supply of affordable rice nationwide.
