DSCVOLLEYs Narrowly Lose 2-3 to Schwerin – Post-Game Analysis and MVP Awards

The DSCVOLLEYs gave everything they had, fought until they were exhausted, but in the end it wasn’t enough to win. Coach Alexander Waibl’s team had to narrowly lose 2-3 (25:21, 26:24, 26:28, 25:27, 7:15).

“I can only compliment the team for their excellent effort. But you could see after just two sentences that we had physical problems. Schwerin scored very well in the second half of the game and we were never really able to get Nova Marring under control. But this one point can perhaps still be valuable,” explained Alexander Waibl after the hard-fought game.

SSC attacker Nova Marring was awarded the gold MVP medal, while silver went to DSC middle blocker Tia Jimerson, who was tied with Pia Timmer as the most successful scorer with 18 points. Nathalie Lemmens scored 16 points.

Alexander Waibl started the game with this formation: Larissa Winter in the pass, Famke Boonstra on diagonal, Jennifer Janiska and Pia Timmer on the outside, Tia Jimerson and Nathalie Lemmens in the middle and Aleksandra Jegdic in the libero position.

The DSCVOLLEYs started the game with concentration, served powerfully and took advantage of their chances, while the hosts initially made numerous attacking errors. When the SSC women’s ball fell to the ground after a misunderstanding in their own ranks and Dresden scored the point for a 10-4 lead, Felix Koslowski asked his women to take their first time out. But the Elbe townspeople continued to push. After two nice attacks from Jennifer Janiska, an ace from Tia Jimerson and a one-legged shot from Nathalie Lemmens, the guests extended their lead to 14:6. Koslowski took his second timeout. After that, his protégés got into the game a little better. When the SSC scored three points in a row, Alexander Waibl asked his team to the sidelines for the first time at 17:11. The coach later brought Sarah Straube into the game for the first time since her injury. In crunch time, the DSC didn’t let themselves be taken away from their bread and secured this passage on the third set point.

In the second section, the Waibl protégés continued their performance seamlessly. They served powerfully and were able to score variably from a stable reception. Larissa Winter always made good use of the two fast attackers Nathalie Lemmens and Tia Jimerson. The DSCVOLLEYs also worked with passion in block and field defense, fighting for every ball. In the middle of the set, three beautiful attacks from Jennifer Janiska and an ace from Winter brought a 10:5 lead. The guests clearly dictated the action until 9:15 p.m. In the final phase, however, the SSC women fought their way up point by point, also because the Dresden women now made a few mistakes. Alexander Waibl substituted Hester Jasper for Jennifer Janiska and the Dutchwoman got the first match point and also the second match point and Pia Timmer put the lid on it with an ace.

The third round was also not for the faint of heart. At first it was a close exchange of blows, but it became clear that the DSC, which was still weakened, could not quite maintain the level. Schwerin increasingly took over the scepter in the attack and gained an 18:14 lead. But the DSC girls didn’t give up. Larissa Winter repeatedly used Tia Jimerson and Nathalie with the first pace. Nevertheless, the SSC won the first set point through Indy Baijens with the point to make it 24:21. Substitute Hester Jasper coldly fended off two opposing chances and with a monster block the DSC even fought for their first match point with a score of 25:24. Unfortunately, Tia Jimerson’s task ended up going out, but when Baijens’ serve was too long, the DSC had another opportunity to make the 3-0 victory perfect. But Nova Marring, who was strong that day, fought back. The hosts were then able to convert their fourth set point to the cheers of their home fans.

Neither team gave each other anything in the fourth period. The picture was dominated by many long rallies in which both impressed with spectacular defensive actions. The DSCVOLLEYs temporarily led 12:9 and 17:14, but Schwerin couldn’t really be shaken off. In crunch time, the Schwerin women once again had the better end for themselves.

In the tiebreak, the resistance of the Dresden women, who had to pay a physical toll on the intense game due to their small squad, was more or less broken. Schwerin had the greater reserves of strength and, above all, scored better. After 130 hard-fought minutes, the narrow defeat was sealed.
