Dry August with 0% soil moisture in places will require more watering – Agro Plovdiv – 2024-08-02 06:19:29

Extremely high July temperatures and deepening drought have caused irreparable damage to maize and sunflower in places in the central, northeastern and southern regions of the country.

Through August agrometeorological conditions will be defined by temperatures around and above climatic norms. A limiting factor for the development of late agricultural crops during the month remains the lack of soil moisture. Rainfall at the end of July was unevenly distributed, and in most parts of the country – late and extremely insufficient to overcome the moisture deficit in the late agricultural crops. In part of the western and southern regions, the soil moisture reserves in the 50 and 100 cm layer are completely exhausted. There is an exception in some places in Eastern Bulgaria, where at the end of July rainfall over 30-40 l/m² was recorded (Razgrad, Shumen, Ruse, Burgas, Chirpan), which moistened the upper soil layers.

For most days of August, the forecasted relatively dry weather will require increased irrigation rates for second crops and late hybrid corn, where the grain will be forming and pouring. The later varieties of fruit trees and vines, which are in the process of ripening the fruits, will need increased irrigation rates.

This year in August, earlier than usual for the country, the development of late spring crops will be completed. Excessive heat conditions and soil moisture deficit in the first half of the summer led to a shortening of the interphase periods in the development of corn and sunflower. At the beginning of August, the ripening phase will be observed for sunflowers in the Danube Plain and in the southern regions. During the first ten days, the early corn hybrids will complete their development, and the mid-early hybrids will see a milk maturity phase. Mid-late corn hybrids will reach waxy maturity in the third ten days of the month.

Weather conditions in August will limit the development of fungal diseases, with the exception of powdery mildew on vegetable crops, fruit trees and vines. During the month, the harmful activity of the last generation of fruit worms should not be underestimated in the case of late varieties of fruit trees. In the vineyards, it is necessary to monitor the appearance and density of the caterpillars of the third generation of the spotted grape moth.

Plant protection spraying in August should be carried out during the cooler hours of the day with preparations with an appropriate quarantine period according to the period of crop maturation.
