Drunken Trespasser Sentenced for Damaging Terracotta Warriors Exhibit

In 2017, a man caused catastrophe after drunkenly trespassing on a special exhibition of the Terracotta Warriors and Horses. He was arrested by US police after breaking the finger of one of the statues. After a long time, the verdict has finally been announced. The man was sentenced to five years’ probation, 100 hours of community service and a $5,000 fine.

According to FBI surveillance video, a man named Michael Rohana, wearing an ugly Christmas sweater, walked into the Franklin Museum in a relaxed manner. At that time, the museum was cooperating with China’s Shaanxi Provincial Cultural Relics Exchange Center to organize “Terracotta Warriors and Horses: The Eternal Guard of Qin Shi Huangdi” (Terracotta Warriors of the First Emperor) special exhibition therefore displays the priceless “Terracotta Warriors” from China 2,000 years ago. A drunk Michael Rohana not only took a selfie with one of them, but also broke off its fingers and put it in his pocket as a souvenir. This drunken riot immediately escalated into an international issue. China severely condemned Michael Rohana’s behavior as “seriously endangering the inheritance of human civilization.”

It is understood that the Qin Shihuang Emperor’s Mausoleum Museum ultimately spent more than 25,000 US dollars on restoring the terracotta warriors and horses, plus other additional costs, a total of 50,000 US dollars was spent. A federal judge called Michael Rohana’s behavior outrageous and even disgusting. “People around the world who know about this will say: ‘Yes, those are the Americans who have no respect for anything.'”

As for Michael Rohana himself, what do you think? Of course, after he woke up, he already regretted it. At the hearing, in addition to apologizing to the Chinese government, he also reflected: “In the past, I was always aimless, wasting time, and didn’t know where to go with my life. This incident is a big problem for me. Warning.” It is understood that Michael Rohana voluntarily sold limited edition sneakers worth US$32,000 as compensation, but the final amount of compensation will not be determined until another hearing next month.
