Drunken Belgian makes a mess in Vlissingen

A drunken Belgian driver has wreaked havoc on an intersection in Vlissingen, in the Dutch province of Zeeland, on Saturday evening. Among other things, two traffic lights had to die. The man from Froidchapelle (province of Hainaut) turned out to have five times more alcohol in his blood than allowed. His driver’s license was revoked.

The driver first bumped into an elevation on the road, then rammed into a traffic light for cyclists, then reversed at full speed onto the cycle path and knocked down a traffic sign, and finally crashed into a second traffic light.

Bystanders took the 39-year-old man out of his car to prevent further damage.

The alarmed police had the man take a breathalyzer on the spot, which already showed that he had consumed too much drink. A breath analysis on the desk confirmed that: he breathed five times the allowable amount of alcohol.

The Belgian’s car was badly damaged and was towed away. The police took his driver’s license, the prosecutor decides whether to get it back.
