On Maundy Thursday at 09.52, the police were notified of several cars that had crashed into the Merraskot tunnel in Asker. The cars were part of a larger youth group with over 20 cars.
– There have been around 20 to 30 cars in this entourage, but there were four cars that crashed together in the tunnel itself, says operations manager Gjermund Stokkli in the Oslo police district.
– The cars have suffered material damage, but there is no question of any personal injuries. There was a bit of a queue in the area, but this should have loosened up.
According to the police, the young people in the cars are drunk – and are probably on their way to an event in Strømstad, but there should be no question of driving while intoxicated.
– Mostly it is about inattention and cars that keep too short a distance from each other. There have also been reports that several of the young people have thrown bottles in the tunnel. Some of the young people are said to have gotten out of the car and into the roadway.
The operations manager also mentions two other accidents, where the police suspect that the cars are from the same youth group.
– We are talking to the drivers now to find out what has happened.
The police otherwise report a quiet Maundy Thursday with few people out in the streets.
