Drunk Residents Burn 8 Houses and Police Post in Jayapura, Papua – 501 Evacuate

A group of residents got drunk and burned 8 houses and a police post in Karya Bumi Village, Namblong District, Regency Jayapura, Papua, after not accepting being reprimanded by one of the Babinsa members, Sertu AD. As a result, now 501 residents have to evacuate.

“The last time I went there, at 12 or 11 o’clock, there were 501 people who were displaced,” said Head of the Jayapura Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Jan Willem Rumere, as reported by detikSulselTuesday (2/1/2024).

Jan said there were 3 refugee posts in Nimbokrang District. The three posts are in Nimbokrang Village, Benyom Jaya I Village, and Benyom Jaya II Village.

He explained that the 501 residents took refuge in residents’ houses in the three villages. The main evacuation post remains in Benyom I Village.

“Then, this community is not united in one building like that “But they are scattered among residential communities in each village,” he added.

Furthermore, Jan said that the government would build three public kitchens. Later, the food and drink needs of the refugees will be distributed through the public kitchen.
