Despite a history of drunk driving in the past, defender Lee Sang-min, who was selected for the Hangzhou Asian Games soccer team, was eventually excluded from the national team.
The Korea Football Association apologized today saying that it had decided to exclude Lee Sang-min from the Hangzhou Asian Games team, saying, “I admit my inexperience in not properly reviewing the relevant regulations.”
According to the Korea Football Association’s national team operation regulations, a fine of 5 million won or more is sentenced to a drunk driving-related act, and a person who has not passed 3 years since the sentence was finalized cannot become a national team player.
Lee Sang-min was sentenced to a fine of 5 million won for drunk driving in August 2020, so he cannot play for the national team until August this year, but in September 2021, he was selected for the national team by age group three times, including the selection of the under-22 national team.
As the submission of the list of players has already been closed on the 15th, the Football Association is checking whether it is possible to select a replacement for Lee Sang-min.
