Drummer Vivi Vassileva Receives Leonard Bernstein Award for Pioneering Percussion Work

Lübeck (dpa/lno) – The drummer Vivi Vassileva received the Leonard Bernstein Award in Lübeck on Friday. The award is a huge honor for her, Vassileva said. The drums are definitely the instrument of the 21st century. According to the jury, she received the EUR 10,000 prize for her pioneering work in expanding the percussion repertoire.

The musician, born in Germany in 1994, is a student of drummer Martin Grubinger, who himself received the award in 2007. “Vivi Vassileva is a great drummer and has a pleasant and creative personality,” said festival director Christian Kuhnt at the award ceremony. Her handling of sustainability issues is also particularly exciting.

Appropriately, she played a cadenza from the “Recycling Concerto” by the German composer Gregor Mayrhofer on two empty plastic bottles. For this, Vassileva was greeted with thunderous applause from the audience. The previous program included the concerto “Inferno” for percussion and orchestra by the Icelandic composer Daniel Bjarnason. The Leonard Bernstein Award has been donated by the Savings Banks Finance Group since 2002. The first winner was Lang Lang.
