Drummer Mareike Wiening – “In New York it is difficult to do nothing” (archive)

With her band the drummer makes an elegant and melodic, sometimes rocking, often rhythmically intricate modern jazz. Before her time in New York, Mareike Wiening studied in Mannheim and Copenhagen, among others with the keyboardist / composer Django Bates and with the percussionist Marilyn Mazur. A year ago she moved back to Germany from the USA. Now she lives in Cologne – when she is not on tour, as she is most of the time: with her quintet, with old colleagues from New York, with the band of trumpeter Rachel Therrien, with the vibraphone player Sasha Berliner or the Fabia Mantwill Orchestra.
