Studies have shown that statin-type hyperlipidemia drugs, which lower blood cholesterol levels, are also beneficial for brain health.

According to HealthDay News on the 10th (local time), a research team of Dr. David Geist, a neurologist at Odense University Hospital in Denmark, statin users have a 16-38% lower risk of intracerebral hemorrhage depending on the duration of the ‘use. reported on the study results.

The research team compared and analyzed the medical records of 2,164 patients over the age of 55 who had their first intracerebral hemorrhage between 2009 and 2018 and 86,255 patients without a history of intracerebral hemorrhage who were matched with them for gender and age.

Among the patients with intracerebral hemorrhage, 989 patients had internal hemorrhage in the brain lobes (frontal lobe, parietal lobe, temporal lobe, occipital lobe, etc.), which occupy most of the brain, and 1175 patients had internal hemorrhage in the non-cerebral lobe. cerebral (basal ganglia, thalamus, cerebellum, brainstem, etc.).

The research team compared and analyzed the medical records of 39,500 control subjects in the brain lobe internal bleeding group and 46,755 control subjects in the non-lobe internal bleeding group.

As a result, it was found that overall, those currently taking statins had a 17% lower incidence of intracerebral hemorrhage in the lobe of the brain and a 16% lower incidence of intracerebral hemorrhage in the non-lobar region compared to those not they took statins.

It has been analyzed that the longer the duration of statin use, the greater this effect.

Those who took statins for less than 1 year or for 1 to 5 years had an 11% lower incidence of intracerebral hemorrhage than those who did not take statins, and those who took statins for more than 5 years showed a 33% lower rate.

In addition, the incidence of internal bleeding in the non-lobed regions was the same as that of the statin-free group in the group taking statins for less than 1 year, 12% lower in the 1 to 5 year group, and 38% lower in the group the group of 5 years or more.

The research team explained, “The overall results show that the risk of intracerebral hemorrhage while taking statins is low regardless of the site of internal bleeding, and the longer the statin is taken, the lower the risk.”

Statins are known to be effective in reducing the risk of cerebral infarction, an ischemic stroke caused by a blood clot blocking a blood vessel in the brain.

Meanwhile, the study results have been published in the online edition of Neurology, an academic journal of the American Academy of Neurology.
