Guards at the Sittard prison have regularly intercepted drugs and telephones hidden in clothes and shoes. This concerns clothing packages from outside the prison that were intended for the inmates.
This clothing trick has gained popularity in recent months, after many standard smuggling routes dried up. After all, due to the corona virus, visit and leave arrangements were dropped, so that inmates were not allowed to leave prison and visitors were not allowed to enter the prison.
In addition, the police have started to patrol around the jail more to deter smugglers and the prison has set up large nets above the shelter, making it almost impossible to throw contraband over the wall of the institution.
“We see that more attempts are now being made in Sittard to get contraband within the prison walls through the import of clothing,” a spokesman for the Justice said against L1. “Packets of drugs are sewn into clothing and processed into shoe soles in a professional manner.”
The staff of the institution was able to find the packages thanks to a scanner, through which all imported clothing has to go through. “We mainly find soft drugs and telephones.”
Smuggling is a criminal offense
The Sittard prison collected the find from the past weeks and handed it over to the police. He starts a criminal investigation into three people who are said to have sent the drug clothing. “In those three cases it concerns cocaine, hash and ecstasy, about fifty grams at a time. Those are still large quantities,” said a police spokesman.
Since November 1, 2019, it is a criminal offense to smuggle illegal substances into a prison. People caught in smuggling are not allowed to go to prison for three months. In such a case, the prisoner for whom that visit comes will be informed by the prison management.
